Sorry, haven't got this one yet. After a galloping start I seem to have ground to a halt about half way through.

Thanks anyway, teenieleek. I have solved all the other clues - but haven't sussed the theme - so post again if you get to the stuck and infuriated stage!

i'm down to the last 3 (no idea of the theme yet although there don't seem to be many alternatives for 19d!)

36a possibly OBAMA? if died = ob?

Ob= died is given in Chambers, so I have 'Obama'.

16. 'Close' can be 'encounter' and 'narrow passage', so that's what I have.
