27a is enjamb jam (stick) at end of measure (en) plus b for black. Extra word is 'bricks'. As for highlighting the route between places is represented by the same letter.

What is the anwer to round work clue. Still can't seem to match it with a possible place.

But what exactly do we do with the 1st and last letters of those place names?

How does "drift" in 2d correspond to "ford" as the thematic component presumably to go with the meaning "bricks" in 27ac?

Just look up "drift" in Chambers. It's as simple as that.

Thanks d'oh. Was not aware of the SA meaning of "drift" which is perhaps somewhat obscure!
