Still can't work out the theme

Hey guys, I'm looking for a hint about the 23 contiguous cells. I've resolved the clashes (or at least followed the instructions obtained from the extra words), solved all the clues, got the theme etc., but after staring at the 'completed' grid can't see anything! Suggestions would be appreciated =)

You're probably making it too difficult now. Look at letter frequencies around your resolved clashes.

Ah! Brilliant - I think I've been staring at it too long...as long as I can interpret 'contiguous' as 'including diagonals', I think it's done.
