I have all of the 12 representatives but I wonder if there is any particular reason for the rule used to fill the clashing cells. Is the result meaningful or just a way to make sure we have identified them.

I think it's just to guarantee that you've correctly identified them. The particular entry method means that they're all uniquely specified, after all.

I still don't get it. I think I have all the words of the instructions from the 1st and 4th letters of the extra words, but I don't see how to resolve the clashes.

It might help (as it did me) if you initially ignore the advice given by the extras from the down clues, and read the across advice as literally as possible...

The extra words from clashing cells will give you a 'cryptic' definition of (i.e. 'clue') a thematic place name. Eg the leftmost clash gives extra words 'steer carmaker', which is OX+FORD. A thematic map might help with the others =)

Ah! Thanks. Now I can see the theme, at long last.

I have all but finished this. But can't understand the clues for the places at 2d/30ac and 32d/38ac. Can't make them fit any of the possibilities. Any help gratefully received.

Extra words are
2d/30a WORK and ROUND
32d/38a FEUD and PIT
I am struggling with 27a
Also for the non thematically represented cells in the path to be highlighted - are they initials?
Help appreciated

27ac is EN in front of JAM+B(lack). BRICKS is the extra word.
