I think the 'alternative outcome' is either a three word item - or what was in it.
Any thoughts?

It's a three word item, but I'm not sure if it should be abbreviated ( ie the 3 unused letters ) - any thoughts on the logic?

Hang on - my maths was wrong! It is a three letter item. The abbreviation was the outcome to be highlighted!

Barista, I think you might be right.
Winners would get the three letter item spelled out by the unused clashes - as opposed to the three highlighted letters, which is what the losers get.
We know the gamble loses because we can add up the score.

I confess I am still struggling with the bottom left hand corner of the grid. Can one of you help me with 32a, 29d and 22d? Only if you are willing, of course. Many thanks one and all,
