Attempting to solve alphabetical clues before trying to get to grips with preamble, can anyone help with: contrary dutch colonist died in Victoria a contemptible person (5). Beginning letter between cl and ew. Letter length may not be accurate, just to complicate more....

Droob - Aust. word for contemptible
Contrary - or, Dutch-D, both reversed.
Died-ob

I parsed it as 'boor' (dutch colonist) + 'd' (died).

Contrary= back to front = DROOB.

Thank you, both! My boer did not work. Your boor does, beautifully. I may need you again...

I see there are 3 nine letter possibilities and only 2 nine letter clues. How have you resolved that?

the one on the second row is the answer to 'Plant early etc'. Which is an anagram.
The one on the second to bottom row is (I think) is the answer to 'Fellow with anger etc'. I think the first letters are FIRE.
Not quite got the other one, which might be the 'operation'.
