Nelson, have you an answer for the gambling game and steering wheel clues?

Steering wheel=helm.
Contains no h (hard)

elm=wood.

not sure about the other one, but I have EC*O

And now I have a disgusted expression because I have not solved that clue, and because I still do not know what to do next....

I think we have to operate the 'things described in the nine letter down clue( Which I think is two words -4,5.)

I also think this might have something to do with the answer to the first clue on the top row - but this might be a red herring.

I think there are only seven answers that are affected.
All the other answers are entered normally.

I have done the operation and lowered one word to take the 'thing' to a new place - the five lettered unclued answer.
