Stealing a peek at work. What a coincidence. I read "clever clogs" somewhere yesterday and thought, "What an odd expression" (we never use it over here), but didn't make the connection.

Ah yes, Ari!. Well done. Wonder where ab was this week? My fault for posting late, I'm sure. I didn't realize they'd be such a 'puzzle' this week.

Here is my working:-

1. f(or)eign = FEIGN = put on

2. SPRUE (centres)

3. guard = preserve; unforgivable con = lifer; “breaks up” = life(preserve)r = LIFE-PRESERVER = club

4.(cryptic) set to = battle = engagement and BATTLE ROYAL = Prince Harry’s engagement?

5. capacity = cc; party = revel; back party = lever; capacity to hold back party = c(lever)c; blocks = logs; CLEVER CLOGS = Newton, “perhaps” (who knows?)

Additional hints provided.

#3. could use it to defend myself.
Then, later, jam = preserve

#5 capacity = cc; bar = lever (party = revel (over) = lever)
shoes = clogs.
