Well, AB could be right, but I feel it is too obscure to use the fourth declension in what is an "easy" concise crossword. Maybe that would be more acceptable in the cryptic crosswords such as Saga, Inquisitor, Azed etc. The Times setter has made a lot of bad grammatical errors recently, asking for a noun and actually giving an adjective as the answer.

Quite so, Jazzgirl - that's why I said that I doubted that he/she were that clever! I'm losing heart with doing that particular crossword!
Anyway, we are off now, taking our eldest grandson(aged 6) out to lunch! I'll look in when we get back to see what thoughts anyone else has had.

I have decided to give the setter the benefit of the doubt. I wonder if AB is about and could give us his opinion on this clue from the Times 6305: 10a causing unhappiness (6) The answer was "bitter" which is shown as an adjective in Chambers (apart from the beer/alcohol) Is there any way this answer can be justified as a noun which seems to be what is required?

If a person is bitter (adjective) can that person be described as "causing unhappiness" or are they the result of being caused unhappiness?

If we're all driven to drink by the anomalies herein, and we drink "bitter" (ie beer) then 'bitter' can be the cause of our unhappiness!!!!!

It`s the slang that annoys me. recently `a party conversation `- the answer was `shmooze`. That`s not my idea of schmooze. And `nuts` was the answer for `mad`. Many more...... Mags.
