Our Judas tree fell across our front lawn in the Christmas gales & also smashed the bird table. Last week my daughter near Chesham had a tree fall across her garden. We really enjoyed the sunshine yesterday but it's back to rain again today. So many people have suffered so much in these gales & floods ....... & it takes so long to clear up for months afterwards. I'm so fortunate to live on a hill but of course we get the full force of the gales.

Hi bobsmum,
I'm sorry to hear about your house and garden. I wanted to say something funny to cheer you up but couldn't think of anything, I think it would have been inappropriate anyway. From what emrach says no one was hurt which is the main thing. Material things can be repaired or mended given time.
I was down in the New Forest on Saturday helping some friends out who had a couple of trees down not as big as 60ft but big enough. They also had the roof ripped off a couple of stables, horses were frightened but ok.
Take care mrw.

I wonder how soon bob's mum's roof can be repaired. It sounds as if its badly damaged. Trees can be cleared away but the roof is much more serious. I'm hoping someone near at hand can help them. What part of the country are they living?

So sorry to hear what happened - just glad that you are all ok. It must have been very scary! I hope the damage can be rectified soon!
I keep looking askance now at the huge copper beech tree in our garden!
I think that we are all thinking a bit "There but for the grace of God....." ish!
All the best!

Sorry to hear about the damage to your house but glad to hear you are unscathed Bobsmum. Houses are just bricks and mortar and can be repaired in time but human life is precious.

When the tree crashed down, did it take you long to twig what had happened? :o)

Hi bobsmum, I'm slowly catching up after a few "lost" days and I'm really sorry to hear of your domestic upheaval. At least no-one physically hurt.
Hopefully your wrangling with the Insurers will soon be sorted with suitable redress coming your way to begin putting things right.

Hi guys,

Thank you all for the kind words and jokes which made me smile. The shock has worn off and reality has set in. As it was a neighbours tree, insurance is getting a bit more complicated than first thought. But it goes without saying, things could have been a lot worse -- we are all ok ---- but the earth did literally move for us --- never got out of bed and dressed and run outside the house in under 20 seconds before and don't ever want to do again !!!! Once again thanks for the kind wishes XX

Really pleased to hear that you are OK and still smiling, bobs mum. How many of you were in the house at the time?

Hi chrise,

There were 6 adults as we had our grown up children and their partners staying for the weekend. We even managed to get the dog on the lead and out quickly. As it was still dark we could not really assess how bad the damage was for a while -- so waited till it started to get light -- i then knew that the kitchen was safe so made the ubiquitous cup of teas and bacon sarnies --- just as well as we were all getting cold --- the tree guys arrived at about 8.30 and it took them 4 hours to cut it down from the roof which caused even more damage as it slid off. But now it is just chopped up and lying on the lawn --- the guys are coming back to remove it before the builders start to put up scaffolding etc to do all the repairs --- they estimate 2 weeks work. We are water tight though so that is one v good thing ----- could have been a lot worse as it is tipping down again today. Ho hum ---
