ascent of Everest?
Wessex looks good - Earl of Wessex, and Thomas Hardy.

SYNTAX looks good too- Doctor Syn + Tax for "charge, def. "orderly arrangement"
IV (four) in POTS (containers)

Not sure about NODDY

Yes - DON backwards, then ends of DaY

I wouldn't have called noddy a "literary figure, though!"

Well done, flopsybunny - have you tried the Guardian yet?

Initially Dorset = d + don = University lecturer = ddon, reversed = nodd + y = end (singular?) of day

Hi flopsybunny
If you set out eah question on a different line, it might cause less confusion (though I admire ginge's success at working "Initially Dorset" into the NODDY clue!)
