I don't believe I'm unintelligent but can someone explain the answers to a couple from the RT 5 from last week.
8 ac "Fugacious" I understand the explanation I found on line - but whoever uses "fugacious" in everyday conversation?
I digress - 11 ac: "Ambassador delaying explosive test here" Answer "Headingley" - OK, "HE" and anagram of "delaying " and obviously where the the test matches are played. but "Ambassador"? or is this crossword speak for anagram of which I have so far been ignorant?
16 ac: Answer "Tagetes" (another everyday word - but no problem there) - Clue: "Flower bed away from house gets planted over" - OK, "cot" from "cottage" gives us the "tage" but where do we derive the "tes"? - from "gets"? - come on!
24 ac: Answer "gelid" - Clue: "Icy cover on turning, say" - Alright, I need to mingle in higher circles to increase my vocabulary but "lid" for "cover" fair enough, but "jay" (I read in the dictionary the pronunciation is "jaylid") for turning? - help!
3 dn: "May get a link for their peninsula" was by this stage beyond my "little grey cells" to fathom but I hope the Maya people were happy on the Yucatan peninsula!
I've got that off my chest - whoever No5's compiler was he had the better of me - just lately I've been doing rather well on the RT.
Oh, those were just the ones where I didn't understand the answers - he had me fooled on more!
Thank you for your patience in wading through this diatribe.
