Thanks Mamya I was thinking in terms of High Explosive.
Where does it say that crossword answers should be words in everyday conversation?....... but we can but try!

Agreed Rossim, if all answers were bog standard everyday words we would complain the puzzles were boring.

I have at last got around to replying to all those who contributed - I feel humbled!
Naturally I would not expect the usage of everyday words in all answers, if so I'd be doing the Quick Crossword but I think the reversed "set" in "tagetes" was vague!
All the other answers now make sense - I'll have to eat more fish!
I'm glad the "HE" explosive which coincided with "His Excellency" also confused someone else.
