Marca. I have placed the LA in TESLA, but I don't see what extra letters were generated by this clue that we need to take out.
And stiil the same problem with AFARA.

I think that RE needs removing from (RE SET)< where RE = for.

AFARA seems to work as it is so I assumed it to be the 7th - it seemed neat being in the centre too!

Nick, the re to la makes good sense, but I thought there were only 6 notes in this scale, leaving the fa still a problem.

It seems that you are ahead of me, marca. I was assuming from the preamble that six out of seven notes had been moved, i.e the 7th might be in the grid just not moved - but maybe wrongly assuming!

Just a note . . . I assume everyone here know we are dealing with a scale that that is a little bit different from the 'do re mi' we use today?

Still puzzled by the endgame here. What is the seventh "theme word", where does it come from and why is it necessary? Surely there only six relevant constituents of the them.e

This is doing my head in. I can ONLY find 5 across thematic clues 13 (OUTRAGE),21 (EUMIS), 29(TESER), 37 (ROLA), 39 (?), of these 21 & 29 make no sense as words to be removed are not in the hexachord provided by 4d -MIS and ER. As for GREIG this seems to me to be a straightforward clue about old England captain TONY GREIG. I'm about to put the whole lot in the bin. Unless someone can help with sixth thematic clue - and as for the seventh ......

Are we singing from the same hymn sheet UT-RE-MI-FA-SOL-LA invented by 4d GUIDO OF AREZZO. If not what on earth is SYD LEXIS up to.

I guess you have cracked it by now but 29 ac is not TESRE but has to be TESER or TESOR leaving no 'note' to be removed as the very muddy preamble mentions nothing about backwards notes. Similarly 21 ac requires removal of MIS (not a note) and replacement with SOL which is OK. Clearly I have the wrong 'scale'.
But really this is all FA too vague !

13a (mi)rage
15a way(si)de
21a eu(sol)
29a tes(la)
37 ro(ut)
39a rasu(re)
the seventh to highlight is fa in 26a a(fa)ra which is a ordinary clue
