'Winter' makes much more sense! The crossword compiler needs a lesson in English grammar if he thinks 'bitter' fits the bill. 'Bitter' is an adjective (unless he is referring to English beer!) - the answer requires a NOUN - bitterness would be acceptable for instance, except of course, it doesn't fit!!!!
I'm NOT impressed!

I agree absolutely with Elle. This sort of incorrect grammar has been happening quite a lot recently with the concise Times crossword. Perhaps a word to the Editor is needed .

I could not agree more – it is exasperating when the clue is not precise! Jazzgirl – you hit the nail on the head!

Damned annoying as Winter made more sense than Bitter.

I was Elle who hit the nail right on the head; I just agreed with her. New clue: causing unhappiness (6)
