I'm just wondering how people are getting on with this. Is it as tough as it looks? I've solved about 3 clues. Does it get easier as you go on?

A lot of cold solving is needed before progress can be made, but the clues are quite difficult. It helps to get 1A/1D placed and to latch on to the method of "augmenting". From there it gets easier, given the 180 degree symmetry of the initial grid.

Cloverjo , to answer your question it does get easier but I have by no means arrived . I have most of the clue answers but they are v. difficult especially as no word lengths are given. I can tell you that the one letter you need to modify some answers is a 'D'. As kilgore trout has already said you need to get 1A/1D to get started.
I can inform you that 1D is the first clue of the 2nd column of clues. Hope that gets you on the way ! If you need more help let me know.

Thanks, kilgore trout and uncle_w. I don't think I'll be able to finish this one, but I'd like a hint with 1d. please to see if i can get going.

Thank you.

Yes Cloverjo. Medium(M) say(EG) one (I) folllowed by initials of next 2 words which describes a medium used in oil painting. That should help you going.
I have completed all the clues now but am looking for the 11th 'D' which I believe is related to the redundant word 'REVERBERANT'. Anybody give me a hint please to finalise this.
Cheers!

Thanks uncle_w.
I put the wrong clue in my post. Just wanted to mention this, in case it sent anyone on the wrong track.

UW: reverberant is not redundant as it indicates the reversal in the wordplay.

Thanks K T, How foolish of me to miss something so obvious. I assume now I need to look for the redundant word which presumably gives 'EASED' or 'DELATION' as they appear to be the only possibilities left that can be modified in the grid. Also is the central column of any significance?

I've managed to solve a few more clues and put some in the grid, but I've seen a post on another forum which hints that the original grid is not square. Is this correct? I can't see how to make it rectangular and still keep the symmetry.
