many thanks cloverjo, I had dUad in 20d which is also two, I can now go back to last weeks to see if I can sort out the themed clues in that one.

Cloverjo - you know what the word was - what has it done?

Surely it's The Lady Vanishes - the 4 letters vanish from the clues.

totally baffled by left side! - 19a & d, 20, 23 & 33. - I've ----dns for 19d - where am I wrong? As for the four works representations - two are obvious, one subtle, but totaled with the fourth (as 2 separate occurrences) - gives only 24 letters???

19dn is ----ans, so you have 35ac wrong. I've now identified 3 of the works but the fourth, which is presumably in the top right-hand quadrant, eludes me.
