Or instead of going up, it could be said to be going backwards....

1 across, of course - my stupidity never fails to annoy me. (Perhaps Drake etc would have made a better fist of dealing with the Aussie batsmen!)

I have two possibilities for the work represented by the extra letters in the acrosses, and one for the downs though it's not entirely relevant since there's no disappearing act that I can see. (Perhaps I have the wrong 4 letter word). As for the 4 in the grid one has already been hinted at, another is very obvious and I can see a possible third but it has only 3 letters which would mean the fourth would need 12 letters. Can that be right?

I have found a three letter work on the right hand side of the grid in the middle.

Escuan - I'm in the same position as you. However I have found either 2 or 3 B**DS in the top left corner. Which is right? I can't make my letters add to 26.

escuan - if you're still unsure about the extra across letters, search for a one-word work from 1945 by the person.

I filled the grid and spotted the theme very quickly, but still don't understand the wordplay for a few of the down clues.

Can anyone explain 3 down and 21 down?

Thanks.

demeter - I think for 3D you have to read it as ER -WRIT. For 21D you trim the edges of endless, endless (i.e. it's hidden).
Can you confirm the number of B**DS if I have interpreted it properly Also what about this 3 character work on the right hand side? Is that correct?

unclued,

There are 3 b**ds. The title on the right is 5 cells, not 3.
