Okay it is a term I have never heard of in this context - yup another slang word for buying dope. Now think of a type of dope and its usual name (well one of them) and then think of this word and the artificial alternative but not in a drug sense. Right if none of this makes sense get back to me :)

Hi Ginge,

Yes, I have phase 2 for 22a.

So far I've got N?I???O?N?

I'd be grateful for a hint please.

emrach: you're probably more familiar with the more generally usable version of 35d, which has the same number of letters. The first word of my clue is just a synonym for that first word of the solution in another sense; words 2 to 4 are another way of saying the 2nd word. Maybe an easier way of putting the rest of the clue would be "as a way of saving..."
Does that help?

Hi again rossim, my confusion down to being in the pub all day.
The first "n" is wrong. "If 'at' first" refers to the answer giving the definition within the clue. The expression was originally used literally but for some time now also figuratively as here.
