Thank you both, they are both terms I have never come across before. but I had found out that it was an anagram of offer hand even and thought it had to be heaven but had never met the word forfend before so thanks to you both & a happy new year to all.

thanks again Mamya I.ve now looked up snob" The word snob is first recorded in the late 18th century as a term for a shoemaker or his apprentice. At about this time it was indeed adopted by Cambridge students, but they didn't use it to refer to students who lacked a title or were of humble origins; they used it generally of anyone who was not a student."

The history and evolution of words is ceaselessly fascinating, I agree. It is a sad day when I don't earn something new.

So all that stuff we learned about "snob" coming from "sine nobilitate" is wrong?!
And second point, Mamya: are you going to be around the rest of the afternoon, say? Chris is sending me the new RT & I might well be in a position to appreciate your help (again) if that's at all possible (I'm one of those Lucky people who don't have to get involved in so much hectic today).
