Oh, sorry, forgot the final anagram: DETONATE (not DENOTATE obsolete or antedote given in CS machine: error?!)

I agree with GK's answers however
1. Anagram of turn + c (initially confident) + he + on = appearing
2 Cut off by river I took as being surrounded by river.
4. OTT reversed

1) Unusual turn by initially confident male appearing in club (9)
TRUNCHEON Anagram of Turn+c he on

2) Relaxation in shelter cut off by river (7)

DETENTE Tent inside river Dee (cut of by) was the intended indicator. http://www.thefreedictionary.com/d%C3%A9tente

3) Philosopher to get up having drunk dram before the start of lunch (9)

ARISTOTLE Dram =Tot with L from lunch inside Arise

4) Painter can rent rejecting what's wholly excessive (10)
TINTORETTO Can=Tin Rent=Tore OTT< wholly excessive (over the top)

The final anagram is indeed DETONATE

Thank you all very much for taking part, Seasons cheer to one and all HAPPY HOLIDAYS Cheers!
