I won't be around at posting time. I'd like to thank the devious Jolan for another set of inspired and challenging clues. May you all have a wonderful Christmas (or whatever debauched pagan festival you might observe). Hm. I wonder what else is in that stocking...

Very best wishes of the season to you too, aristo, (just in case we don't encounter each other again before then.)

1. ANAGRAMS OF EACH OTHER as the 2 long phrases eventually revealed themselves to be!
2. SNIPPETY (trivial) = snip (trim) +pet (doggie) +y (trophy at last).
3. MALLETS ( beetles): malls containing ET.
4. SHINDIG ("do") hidden in clue (took me ages to see!)
5. RUMBLE : 2 meanings
6. STEAMROLLER starting with one (street) (ST)

1 no idea
2 frippery?
3 MALLETS (the point I made earlier is that Wikipedia says "A mallet is a kind of hammer, often made of rubber or sometimes wood, that is smaller than a maul or beetle and usually with a relatively large head.
" - though it does refer to a "beetle mallet" later in the article.)
ET in MALLS
4 looking forward to seeing the answer, as it seems to have been much appreciated!
5 I have FATHOM (double definition?)
6 no idea

Thanks for a frustrating day, jolan (don't really mean it, about the "frustrating", that is!)

Hi Jolan
Thank you very much for all the entertainment over the year. I hope you have a good Xmas and that your brain is rested so that you can come up with some more fiendish clues for 2014
My suggestions are the following. I’m not sure about 6 and I think I’m right on 1.

1. The public art galleries and, I bet, large picture halls are something else? (8,2,4,5) ANAGRAMS OF EACH OTHER. (The public art galleries is an anagram of I bet, large picture halls)

2. Trivial trim leads doggie to trophy at last (8) SNIPPETY
Trivial- def. Snip (trim) Pet (doggie) Y (last letter of trophy)

3. Shopping centres keeping alien beetles (7) MALLETS
Malls (shopping centres) with ET (alien) inside

4. Do in, push in, dig in (7) SHINDIG
Hidden in puSH IN DIG in

5. Get to the bottom of sound (6) FATHOM
Double definition

Bonus clue for Christmas.

6. Make way roughly starting with one? (11) STEAMROLLER
I discussed this offline with Greedy and we both independently came to this answer.
Make way roughly as in force through and a steamroller is what you would start to make a way or road with?
