A pretty prickly one this morning! And now for a well-deserved coffee!

This is the toughest Spectator I've tried to solve. I'm getting nowhere with it.

This is more like it, although I'm nowhere close to finishing but I do have the author and quote.

I don't think that 9a is a clue with a hidden jumble
so could someone point me in the right direction?
My first thought was that is was an anagram.

Thanks.

For those without the puzzle maybe I should have
given the full clue -
Casseroles lacking right filling used to be showing
thin quality. (10)

Terry: it's a synonym for casseroles - one "r" Inside a synonym for "used to be", def. thin quality!

It's not an anagram. You need an 8 -letter synonym for 'casseroles', then lose an 'r' (lacking right). This fits inside a 3-letter word meaning 'used to be'. The definition is 'thin quality'. Hope this helps!
