Finished without any help! Yes GK, good poem and I'm ashamed to say never heard of him. The depths of my ignorance are of Mariana Trench proportions.

Hi, Farr: I've just got up here!
15a Synonym for bad + abb. for book, all reversed, =archaic word for speed (in Ch. of course)
15d Def. "befit" (ONE word); busy animal surrounding abb. verse after 2-letter word for stop
28a It's one of those "hidden consecutive jumbles", extra letter P, def. "hot" ("brittle is the anagrind).
And btw all the letters you have already are correct.
Good luck!

28 A is one of the 17 clues with jumbled letters.
15 D is just an old-fashioned word for 'be fit' - and contains a 3-letter word for a 'busy person', a one-letter abbreviation for 'verse' and a 2-letter word for 'cessation' (which I didn't know, but got from crossing letters).
15 A. It's 'b' for 'book' and a 4-letter word (reversed) for 'bad' (actually 'very bad' is more accurate).

This is really too much, but in the Christmas spirit.........................

4a magicians = wonderworkers
11a naive = small-town
3d havers = owners

It's your fault if I get lynched by the others now.....................
