That's what I thought too, but GK's point is valid - if you "Cockney" HOLD HAND it should gibe OLD AND!

It's just one of those clues to lead you astray somewhat I think, like those clues that have commas which should be ignored. I hope I know what Im talking about . Lol

The clue reads "veteran cockney to carry worker". def is veteran. cockney to carry = (h)old + hand (worker).
apart from "hold" = "to carry" which seems a bit iffy to me, what's the problem. there is no reason to think that hand should be in cockney speak.

Hold seems kosher for carry e.g.
Hold oneself in a particular way: "she carries herself well"
