I think it's a D. The 1st letter of the 1st wd has to be changed to mean yr 1st 4 letters of the answer. Can you explain the last 2? If the def. of that part is the words 2 & 3 in the clue, I don't u'stand why its last letter is missing here. Follow??!!

Thanks but I still don't understand what letter is therefore the correct one at beginning of the first word - s? I think the fourth unchecked letter of answer is a D too because of the last word in the clue (presumably the definition) - but I'd like to be able to rule out the possibility of it being S as that forms a word too!

Yes I think the correction letter should be S (giving D in the answer). To see why the final letter of the second part is missing: look at all the definitions of the final letter in Chambers.

Still dont understand 4D

Thanks - I can see how the final two letters of the answer+one other can mean "highest note" but don't understand how the "missing" or "from" works in the wordplay. Re 4d, the letter that has to be replaced is the middle letter of the fifth word - if you replace it with o, that yields an abbreviation that has to be removed from the plural corresponding to the first two words of the clue giving the answer defined by the last word in the clue (used as a verb)!

Maybe I see it now - it's using "a" = "from" to be removed from the three letter word corresponding to words 3+4 in the clue. I have to say "a"="from" seems a bit weak.

In the "from" meaning it is accented.
Got 4D now thanks.

Exactly! I can't find "a" meaning "from" anywhere, though it had that meaning in Latin!
Had never heard of "to l*** a film " either, but at least that's in Ch.
Oh, well!

I am puzzled by the last letter of the 12. I can find a title and a name, but these only make 11 letters. Letters in adjacent squares do not leap out as relevant (unless one takes a latin initial). Or have i been hooked by a massive red herring?
