I wonder why the clue specified "colourless" gas? Coloured gases are very much the exception (top of my head I can think of about 5, 4 of which are halogens).

hi chrise if rambutan as suggested by ab is correct. Then the only answer starting with the b is bespangle the clue for this is Obtain starting price edge for stud(9) which does not make any sense!
