I wasn't all that happy with 1dn (assuming I have it right!) - sound frequency rather than intensity, surely?

btw I didn't know you are in Lancashire, mamya - so am I (though I bet I'm farther east - nearly Yorkshire, really).

Pitch is the quality of a sound so it appears to fit

Beg to differ, jazzy - pitch is the frequency of the sound (the "note") - "volume" is the intensity.

From the online dictionary

Pitch

a. Acoustics The distinctive quality of a sound, dependent primarily on the frequency of the sound waves produced by its source.
b. Music The relative position of a tone within a range of musical sounds, as determined by this quality.

Definition of pitch: Physics: Highness or lowness of sound characterized by the frequency

Maybe this is what the setter was referring to ?

Hi jazzy
I think your second post confirms my point - frequency rather than intensity.
Oh well, we both got the answer anyway!

Good morning Chris;
I was very late getting to bed (after midnight) which is not beneficial to me. I am not a night owl at all. This morning, I checked two of my books :

1. The COE (1990) shows:
pitch - that "quality of a sound" which is governed by the rate of vibrations producing it.
(At least this agrees with my post 25 )

2. Westrup and Harrison's Music Encyclopedia (1959) shows:
pitch - the relative height or depth of a sound determined by the rate of vibration of the medium.

One of the definitions of "Depth" is shown as "intensity" so I think we can forgive the setter, maybe ?
I am now off for some much-needed sunshine, walking a friend's labrador and generally getting up to mischief. Have a good day. Jg
