If it is 170 km to VENICE, 208 km to TRIESTE and 288 km to RIMINI then how far is PADUA?

Really struggling with this! I've tried adding and multiplying the position of the letters in the alphabet and dividing by the number of letters in the name. I've tried counting the number of straight lines in the letters of the name and multiplying etc but cannot come up with the correct distances. I've even tried reversing the alphabet!

One would assume you're looking for an actual place. Using whatever scale your map is in, just draw an arc from each of the three cities and the three should intersect at one point. Then use the same scale to measure the distance to Padua.

Or is it stated that the answer must be arrived at logically or mathematically rather than "concretely"?

Or is it a word game?

That was my first thought too, but I can't come up with a place that matches all three distances (though Bolzano is far out).

for some reason the "nt" in "isn't" didn't appear in my last post!

Well you can't just make up three random distances and come up with an actual point on the map. One must also assume it's as the crow flies rather than by car- though I suppose it could be by rail...nah, still too many variables.

this is a mensa type question geography does not come into it, you have to give a mathematical value to Padua based on the relationship between the letters and mathematical values of the other three words
