I presume this is from The Express, I've never seen a Mensa LOGIC puzzle that requires you to go looking at maps. The answer should be there,in the numbers and letters.

...but I can't see it!

This is a MENSA logic question it is nothing to do with reality. You have to use logic and maths to find the distance to PADUA

If you give the normal letter values to the letters of Rimini and times the total by 4, you get 288. But can't see any logic there, nor does similar stuff work with Venice and Trieste

I think its something to do with the number of straight lines in the letters.

VENICE contains a total of 14 straight lines. Multiply by values of vowels and consonants etc
