The way I look at it (and I may be wrong) is that the distance between the places in alphabetical order reduce by a factor of 42. Therefore Padua should be 330km. theknuckle - I apologise if I'm wrong
P
q.......>42
R.288
s....>80
T.208...>42
u....>38
V.170

....then take away the number you first thought of!

Then stop doing the Great Brain Quiz, where this question is from (and not mentioned anywhere by the asker)

There does seem to be a sequence of

V u T s R q P

The difference between V and T is 38 ( 19 x 2 )

The difference between T and R is 80 ( 20 x 4 )

Could the difference between R and P be 168 ( 21 * 8 ) OR 126 ( 21 * 6 )

If I'm right, I think the sequence is too short to say whether it should be 6 or 8.

Also is there any logic to U=19 and S=20.

Or am I totally wrong? Probably.

Altohugh if my logic is right I'd suggest 21 * 6 as P is SIX letters away from V

I agree with georgeiii - don't do Great Fun Quiz.

The question setter repeatedly requests contestants to not ask questions from it on Q & A sites. pastiche constantly ignores this.

Finally what this has to do with a crossword is beyond me.

Now assuming the difference between the differences is a constant 42, you should get the following:

P.410
q....>122
R.288...>42
s....>80
T.208...>42
u....>38
V.170

but why should 42 be a constant? There is only one known instance, between u & s.
Perhaps that changes as well, though I have no idea by what mechanism.

330 or 410 is not the correct answer. It is nothing to do with the differences in distances. You have to find the difference in values of vowels and consonants, square them, and divide by the number of letters in the place name.
