Aristo, are you sure you're not thinking of your term 'ghost anagram' for 'indirect anagram'? Either works for me.
i think i first heard the phrase 'subtractive anagram' from a post by Tony and i liked it, although there can be no right or wrong here?
Jolan makes them seem effortless.

No, I still use "ghost anagram"- I like it better than "indirect". I used subtractive for that very thing and was set straight.

no way would subtractive mean ghost/indirect but that doesn't rule out other meanings.lets have a fight!

Sorry I couldn't join you yesterday but I've had family related problems to deal with and they have used up a lot of emotional energy.
Another set of great clues including, what has become a Jolan trademark, the 'subtractive anagram'. I checked with a couple of friends who set crosswords and they agreed that that is the term for that type of clue.
I think it is all down to the surface reading
which made your 'Cool Ones Heels'... clue last week such a good one.
