Thanks again ixion, I got the parsing but don't like the clue; I'm never happy with 'double use' of words, ie 'wretch' and '(t)it' being an anagram and also part of the definition. Just a personal thing I expect, and I should be used to Brummie by now.
Thanks again for taking the time to explain. Have a good evening

hi to all, read all comments and have picked 4 of the matched items. 5d-23a, 4d-26a (made 26d=POOL), 23d-10a, 17d-3d. the other 2 linked items would help ie ?-20d-?, ?-27a-?.

Parsing 19D. Does the last letter equate with "clay"? I have T.

Finished except for 26a, which I can't pair with another clue - they all seem to be already paired or self-contained (including 4d).
Can anyone point me in the right direction ?
