Thanks, AJT1 and Harty, the term is unfamiliar to me and has not showed up in my "googlings". That's me finished (I think!). Happy to help others with clues if asked.

If you had tried Chambers instead of Google you would have found the term hunter confirmed.

Harty. A gold pocket watch is not necessarily a hunter. Hunter refers to the case, of course, you may well have a hunter-case gold pocket watch. You may even have a half-hunter case gold watch.
