I've got Caller ID. It came free with the BT Phone (even the cheap ones have it included)Then you can put all your friends' and contacts' numbers in the memory. Anyone not listed (i.e. International, Unavailable, or any numbers you don't recognize ) can be ignored. If you have a message facility (e.g. 1571) even better.

I registered with these people but still get scam calls.

http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/tps/index.html

I now make a note of the number and enter it in my "phonebook" on the handset as SCAM so therefore when it shows up, we don't answer it.

There are an amazing amount of these numbers stored on Google, all you need to do is a search on the caller ID and you'll see who they are.

The automatic ones are a pain, because once they know what time you're at home and answer the call, they become even more persistent.

Have you tried programming the given number which sends a message saying you don't received unidentified callers.

My trick is just to screen all calls by letting them go on to the answering machine...

..or if I am feeling a bit of PMT...that is a pre-meditated tantrum, I will answer and ask to talk to their supervisor...because they are not paid enough to be expected to deal with the "wrath" I am about to give out.

They either hang up, or do put me on to their superior....mmwahahaha...great fun.

It does work with some of these cold calls.

I was also registered with the telephone preference thingy, but the determined ones get through. The best thing I ever did was ditching the landline and getting a free smart phone for £10 a month. I've saved a fortune and never get an unwanted call.

I have 2 ways of dealing with unwanted callers- 3 if you count heavy breathing right back!
I have a loud whistle by the phone. I tell them I am going to blow it, then I do.
Or I ask the name of the company and say I'm registered with the telephone preference service and will report them. Doesn't work with calls from abroad. I just whistle to them.
Or I simply put the phone down.
Another thing. Don't EVER buy Pure Lifta face cream, tooth whitener or Acai berries via the internet. I don't know if they have stopped the sacms yet but you will find your credit card stung for loads of small amounts for clubs you didn't join, and large amounts for products you don't want. For each thing you have to phone America in prime time to get a cancel number- and they just change the name of the health club and charge you again. All you have to do is type the product and the word scam into Google before buying!

Good advice Rosiland...

Between both our methods we could be on to something...

Ooops, sorry Rosalind. I actually typed that out a few hours ago and didn't hit Add Reply. Then I came back a few minutes ago, hit Add Reply, then thought 'I bet someone else has suggested that in the meantime...'
