Must be easy this week because I've finished in record time (for me) and with no help! Feel pleased none the less!

Well done Molly, maybe you can help me then?
8A & 17D are they looking for names of rivers?

Got 17d by thinking conference - but the rest of the clue seems painfully convoluted and only became apparent afterwards!

Hello all
Just finished , but thought there were too many anagrams (moan)
I'm still trying to get the the wordplay on 17d, but it obviously fits. It will probably dawn on me as soon as I finish sending this.
Sending my best wishes to old gal (keep positive. I am sure the result will be all you wish for ) Also kind regards to Navigator, pipesmoker and anyone else who has to deal with health issues.

Good afternoon all.
Puzzle finished but I'm not sure of 5d.
Jazzgirl I think the city in question in
17d is Amiens (I hope this hasn't broken the
golden rule). Thanks for your kind thoughts.
Kindest regards to everyone,particularly
those not enjoying the best of good health.

Hello Navigator
Thank you for your help on 17d. I just couldn't see the city.
For 5d, (cadge ) I used L for pound with an alternative word for purse.

Re 17d .If you separate `a` as in `a river` the French town is spelled backwards and it`s the one with a Roman monument. Just being pedantic
- the answer is the same !

Ah! yes Magworth, that fits with the 'backing' part of the clue. Thanks
