I think this is a little bit of a duff clue. The usual expression is shape up well.

Hi there Phillip and thank you.

Do you have a reference for "shape up well" = "promise"?

I've 'trawled' worldwide and cannot find one.

Hi Jolan

I think this may have been previously mentioned....Chambers has "shape up" as "to be promising".

Jolan, If you google "shape up well" you will get lots of hits (as opposed to none for shape well) The promise isn't in the sense of giving your word on something. Rather that something shows signs to encourage you to think that it will do well. e.g. a promising footballer or a young violinist showing promise. i.e. they shape up well.

Thnk you Ixion and thanks you Phillip.

There was a glaring error in the SAGA crossie and both Saga and the Setter apologised.

This current clue either contains an error or is VERY badly constructed.

I'd love to have Tony's comments but he seems to be absent for a wee while. I really hope he is OK.

Thanks again averybody. Methinks this has been flogged to death. I'm off out now.

PS.I omitted to say the bad error in Saga occurred a few months ago.

You get the odd duff clue in most crosswords. It's not the end of the world is it. Nobody died.
