I did have the right answer, though I didn't get (and don't particularly like, sorry!) knit/stink/niff etc.
After solving 1-6, I painstakingly read the definitions of those words - and kept my eyes peeled for words beginning 'gri'(as far as I'd got). The definition for 'novice' took me to 'griffin' - and then all I had to do was check that in Chambers.
A very enjoyable puzzle - thanks!

Thanks, ixion for a very challenging competition. Pity it wasn't conducted in the same spirit as the first two weeks despite your encouragement to post answers. I thought it degenerated into a bit of an egofest.

Well, there still seems to be some life in the weekend warm up idea(despite my tortuous clue for griffin)so expect another next Friday.

ixion,
i,ve been away for a bit so i missed this(off again on Monday), i doubt i would have got Griffin without some indication of the reversal.
it seems like those who did it enjoyed it and only withheld uncertain answers/guesses so as not to spoil it for others.not to boast.
please keep it up - i'm sure the feedback can only help you.

Ixion - I hope there will be another puzzle next week, as I found this one quite a challenge. I hope my posts did not lead to anyone thinking I was on an ego trip!

No - I don't think you're on an ego trip but you deserve to be this week ! I thought you'd peaked on the 12th with "Vathek" in the "V" quiz.

I'm glad no-one gave the answers too soon - and I might even take part (well, I'll try!) next week.
