Thanks, ixion - I didn't see all the detail in lammergeier. I started off by needing a word that began with 'l' and ended with 'r' -when I remembered 'lam' it all came together in my own simplistic fashion!

I think 4 works - just about. Nice definition. Still can't see the link between the answers. I would guess that 7 starts with G (leg-end)?

Annoyingly, I still can't see it. I'm going to get ousted from the PC in a minute, so I'll check in again tomorrow.

7. Legend? King one knits?!(7)

I'm now sure this is a bit overcooked, as peterm has already pointed out legend=leg-end...I've added ?! to knits to emphasize an unorthodox contrivance on my part...as mentioned earlier reading the clue(and the answer)in reverse may help.

Apologies for(in my effort to make it the last one solved) making (7) quite so obscure.

ixion - Joan's got it, so it must be do-able. But I can't for the life of me see any link between the answers to 1 - 6. I'll have to give up, I'm afraid.

I had that written down but could not justify it.

I feel like I've had my pockets pinched!

I had no idea that griffin was such a versatile word.

Well done ixion, and to whoever managed to solve it.
