but the mate has stowed away the contents of this vessel (5)

Add the contents of this (hi) to another common word for mate to get a small container (vessel)

Quizmad Have finished, hoping all correct and no spelling mistakes when I fill it in and send off. 38 Think of a home for man's best friend 43 A very unusual name for fine material begins with R and sounds rather like a girls name 58 Anagram of greatly and one other rather obvious letter 60 A really shocking piece of news is an incendiary sounding word with second syllable something from the heach. Hope these help, don't want to give the answers, it's annoying when people do that, much nicer to puzzle over them for a while.
