I don't have 6d or 16d so I only have the first letter of 15ac.
This is what I have:
Change the 't' at end of heat to a 'd' (could be 's' but makes no difference.)
Split is at HE//AD (or AS)
Some of 'his' records were perhaps criminal but lots were great!
Also think Tolkien.
This could well be rubbish - if you have 6d and/or 16d and this fits perhaps you could let me know.
Cheers.

ixion,
My 15a is totally different to EB's! I'm thinking dodgy family member and changing first letter of 'slacks' - answer fits with my 6d and 16d anyway.

Damn!
Thanks AndyK - I've just seen a big flaw in my effort for 15ac.
It seemed to (sort of) work but I was reconsidering just before coming back here.
My word was 'elvish' as in 'he ELVIS Had'. Back to the drawing board!
Does 15ac start with 'E'?

Thanks again AndyK - have it now.
Sorry about my hint ixion - seemed OK (sort of) for a while.
15ac is a word I've not come across before -it's in my COED - ancient Greek for young man 18 - 20 undergoing military training, if I now have the right answer. Now for 6d & 16d!

PeterM; Still think it makes sense : Normally law-abiding citizens do sometimes commit offences for 'good' causes e.g. Greenpeace, Animal Rights protesters etc.

ixion,
Yes, you're definitely on the right track. The crossing letter from 6d makes it a lot easier!
