36 d Hoax, inflammatory online activity only seen after each opening? (11)

RICKROLLING apparently - no, me neither. I can see 'trick' and 'trolling' but where is the signifier for the deletions, and what is the definition?

39 d Drink something made in Java in capital of Indonesia (9)

APPLETINI it seems. Never heard of it, and completely lost.

Apparently RICKROLLING is an online trick, where clicking on a link doesn't take you where you expect, but instead to a Rick Astely video - so "hoax" is the definition.

Haha. Thanks Malone. I would never have got there. To me Java is the island. Why can't these tech types coin a new word for their inventions?

Thanks ChrisE. I had checked the word - hilarious, eh? I still don't see how it parses sensibly. I guess like a lot of clues these days it doesn't quite, really.

36d is an &lit.

Hoax is (t)RICK.
Inflammatory online activity is (t)ROLLING.
First letter removal indicated by ‘only seen after each opening’.
The whole clue is the definition.
Actually rather clever.

I’m reminded of this Guardian Prize puzzle by Soup where the perimeter Nina took the solver (unknowingly) to the Rickrolling video. In effect we’d all been Rickrolled!

Well I guess, Jono. I can't say I like it much, but then I don't like the word 'policy' at 12d as a synonym for the answer 'insurance' or that word being synonymous with 'coverage' at 26a. Perhaps I'm too fussy.

And I find it hard to imagine that many Times readers are familiar with the word 'rickrolling' that the spellcheck on here rejects.

Thanks for the help guys.

Haha. Malone, I know that already. But, in common with many friends of both sexes and various orientations, here in sunny cosmopolitan Bournemouth, I have always used the term 'guys' and indeed 'chaps' in a non-sexually specific manner to simply mean 'people' or 'friends'. On the other hand, the blokes at my gun club I collectively address as 'ladies'. However, as you are such a nice helpful person, I will try to remember to revert to 'people' on here : )
