Hi, Mattrom. I considered both but went with the person on the basis that the utensil is an obsolete spelling. But I agree either could work.

I can't find a synonym for the first word in the chain, which I think must go at 7d.

My fault. I had filled in 17a before I understood the steps, and then saw it was full so forgot that this was a guess!
