Crates, the jumbled answers give a well known author, but not of any of the works revealed. There is symmetry as you'd expect.

Sorry for delay in reply - have been travelling. I did have the name in the column but didn't see why it was that particular name. Presume any author would do? ...

Hello all, grid filled, all the jumbled stuff sorted, but as is often the case I’m unsure about some of the missing letters for the extra writer…
I have L?IR?N??LLO
Have I gone wrong somewhere? Any help with extra letters for 12, 18, 23, 30, 36 (all across) much appreciated so I can put this one to bed…

Natty969, they look correct. It might help to know the first one is an initial.

Crates, yes, any author, but you might be pushed to find many with 12 letters whose first and second names are both anagrams

....an orphan does play a major role in the most well known of the down author's works. So there is some relevance in that sense I think.

IGNORE last post if just starting out on this puzzle. It's probably giving too much away. Sorry, I was half asleep when I posted it.

Only one of the six seems to be an orphan, so that may be a bum steer, Hugh.

Oh dear. I'm feeling very stupid but could someone please help me with the basics here?
Firstly, when there are two across answers that need jumbled, are the two answers kept separate from each other? And how does the fact that jumbling one column affects all the across clues intersecting it?
And would it be giving too much away to tell me which column it is? Then I might manage to tackle the actual clues!
