Unclued -- I think you may find what you're looking for if you peruse the Contents page right at the front of the dictionary.

Will, I must be missing something. My copy of the 12th edition doesn’t have Christian names any more.

This is an unfair puzzle. Without the relevant edition of Chambers, anyone who has solved the clues is reduced to guessing several of the blanks. It would be useful if crossword editor Doc had a backup editor when he is the setter.

You surprise me. By a quirk of fate I have both the 11th and 13th editions and in each of them "Some first names" is the first appendix following the main body of the dictionary, beginning on page 1835 and 1833 respectively. Surely Chambers can't have removed it just for your 12th edition.

It looks to me that those who have the 12th edition of Chambers will struggle with this puzzle. I have found this recent history of the Chambers dictionary on the Crossword Centre website: http://www.crossword.org.uk/chambers3.html. It says:

"In 2011 the 12th edition of the Chambers Dictionary was published... The main complaint from crossword enthusiasts was that the section of Some First Names had been omitted.

"August 2014 saw the publication of the 13the edition. To the delight of crossword enthusiasts the list of First Names was reinstated."

The first appendix is phrases and quotations from foreign languages. I’m not happy that there is no way of knowing the proper names. Can someone post a link to where they can be found or indicate the ambiguous ones?

Thanks for the link, Twit. That’s interesting. Makes me wonder if there will ever be a hard copy Chambers 14th edition.

Ps. If anyone uses the link you just need to remove the full stop at the end.

Also, for those using apps, the extra sections are not included for Windows or Android.

Apologies for my previous tone of scepticism. It seemed incredible that the publishers had removed that useful section for a single edition. How weird!
