33a - Ringing tone's complex sound (5)

This is a double definition so there is no wordplay. However, Chambers gives 2 spellings - one beginning with C and the other K and I can't see on what basis one is meant to choose.

Nobody else has queried it so no doubt I'm missing something obvious, but what?

It's Ok, I think the C version is the only one that can also mean "ringing tone", so I'll go with that.

Brendan, I settled on the C version also, partlly because I thought that "sound" has to be the homophone indicator.

Any hint for my last, 32A (an antonym)? And how does one parse 34A, presumably the cordial.

Hi Pendragon
32A is indeed an antonym. For the clue, the wordplay involves a 2-letter abbreviation for councillor and a 4-letter word for improve.
For 34A, the wordplay is a 6-letter word for cinnamon cut short (a word I associate with Indian cooking) plus a one letter succeeded.

Hi Pendragon,

32a - this is an antonym. The originally word is a 2 letter abbreviation of "councillor" then 4 letter "improve" as a proofreader might do to text.

34a - 6 letter word meaning coarse "cinnamon" minus it's last letter then single letter "succeeded" - definition is "fruity flavouring"
