Making very slow progress. Clutching at straws, I've Googled the lyrics to Invisible Sun, but can't find any succession of words that fits the enumeration! Are you sure that's the song, darla?

It’s an expression and it contains a word for a jazz fan. Think back to when you were a kid and you came in all scruffy having been out playing and what your parents might say about you

Thanks birder. I can guess most of it from your hint, but still puzzled by the second word.

....except I too fell in to the 5th word trap. The other one is much more common, over here at least.

OK, finally filled the grid, but several not parsed - 18d in particular.

Favourite 20a for the precise definition!

Chrise, I too was more familiar with the alternate 5th word in 7/1d - the Antiques Roadshow put me on track - I've often seen the expert on the show greet people with 'Let's see what you've.......today'

As for 18d, think about removing parts from last word.

Agree with previous post re 18D. Known as a subtractive anagram, I believe.
