Ugh. Zero clues after 20 minutes. Admittedly I have a wee hangover, but even so ...

Thanks, a1. I figured 23 had to involve UK GK, of which I have close to zero.

Got the grid filled in, I think--thanks for the assist on 12ac! And I believe I've just got the parsing for 1ac, which is devilish--many little bits. The exact enumeration is spoily and I will put it after some space at the bottom.

Still absolutely nowhere on the parsing for 20ac--oh wait. Cricket?--and is 7d, 1d a cryptic definition or is there something more wordplayish going on there? I can see a definition for the 4 but I can't figure out how Antiques Roadshow comes in. Also, is 19ac a triple definition? I can't really make out the first part, if so.

Thanks to Enigmatist for the challenge!

I think (7,1) d is a cryptic definition. Weirdly (considering that US slang is involved), the US usage I've always seen has a different 5th word.

Thanks Enigmatist.

Haven't been doing Enigmatist and IO for months now, mostly out of fear. Tried this, and found it to be accessible. The two long ones on either side opened up nicely. in 7, 1 I had a different fifth word, that messed up SW big time. Some parsing to go.

COD: 12a or 20a

Got 24a first, then 3d. Used a wordfinder on 6,8 - now don't feel inclined to finish!

I like a challenge. So I don't mind if the puzzle takes me a while and a few sittings to finish. But I feel I just wasn't on Enigmatist's tip today. Not his fault just too many I still can't parse.

Is 13a even a word? I guess it has to be. 18d and 25a I have stared at but can't find how they parse. Like others my fifth word was not what I am used to for 7,1.

FOI 3d. LOI 22a. COD 15d and 16a.

Good luck tonight England.

I’ve heard 7,1 both ways, and I don’t know that it’s US. In fact, I recall hearing it the way it is here in the song “Invisible Sun” by The Police

I have filled the grid finally, but have quite a few left to parse. That will have to wait as it has just passed midnight here.

I agree Darla, my family are not American but my mother used to use this expression whenever she saw me on my way out to see bands in the late 79s, though I never got to see the Police!
