Smug feeling - I knew that word at 17!
Needed a Google to confirm 11d, though. Definition is very acurate.

Finished, after some help from this forum. I hadn't spotted the theme!

But although I have an answer for 6d, I can't parse it. Presumably the last 3 words are the definition. Gentle hints please?

Hi, pamd. If you change the first letter you will have a word meaning smashing.

Well I got home at 10.30pm and finished off the crossword quite quickly. I had some trouble with 1ac as I'd filled in the wrong answer to 2d starting with a D, similar to the actual answer.

There were a couple I couldn't parse: 6d - where does the Knight come in? 16d I looked up Lamela and discovered he is a footballer, but couldn't see how he came into it. As I write this the penny has dropped and I've worked it out.

The performance of Wolf hall I saw at Budleigh was wonderful with a small ensemble playing the music and Anton Lesser doing the narration. I must read the books again.

Hi Roof,

I hope you enjoyed your concert.

6d - "Knight" gives the first letter of the answer (replacing "bachelor" which would give you "smashing") and is how it's written in chess notation

Parsing query for 4d please. I see the former VP but how does the 3-letter insertion mean ‘objective’?

The objective is hidden inside the VP

...or did you mean why is it "objective"/ Think aim, purpose.
