JemimaB, I don't think the name of an app is an 'advert', and it didn't seem bleak to me. I think Uber has been an answer, in at least one crossword and I expect other new-fangled 'products' have also shown up. Oh yes, Twitter was quite common for a bit.

Fair enough! Bleak only in the sense that this kind of product placement (if it was) would be inescapable, because one wants to complete the grid. I've never heard of this product before and would like to think I'm well-travelled, digitally!

Thanks, JemimaB. I always find it interesting when people like or dislike a certain kind of clue - there's nearly always someone who'll disagree! My pet hate in the Spectator - often in Doc puzzles - is totally unfamiliar place names. I like to think I'm well-travelled, literally, but Doc really does test me at times.

You mentioned advertising and product placement - I remembered last night that a recent Doc puzzle had Cif, the cleaning product.

I see 21D/17D was “Amour / Fou” in the end.

I preferred “About / You” as a cryptic reference to Sedaka’s The Diary, I thought that was genuinely cryptic rather than a simple translation like the actual answer.
